Reimagining Autism in a World Built for the Neurotypical
The Paradox of the "High-Functioning" Label

For many, finding out they are autistic doesn't hit like a shock. It feels like a quiet, confusing relief. Decades of feeling out of sync finally have a name. But for those often categorized as having "high-functioning autism," that name carries a heavy, unintended consequence. The term implies competence or ease, yet it often dismisses the internal chaos that accompanies a neurodivergent life.

{"title": "The Paradox of the "}

Here the friction between the Medical Model and the Social Model of Disability becomes clear. The medical model treats autism as a collection of symptoms to be managed or cured, fixating on the "deficits" within the individual. Conversely, the social model argues that disability is not an inherent trait but a mismatch between a person's needs and the environment they inhabit. Calling someone "high-functioning" often serves as a justification to deny support. The logic goes: if they don't appear visibly disabled, they don't require accommodations. This ignores the sensory overload, the executive dysfunction, and the exhaustion that usually accompany their so-called "normal" appearance.

Masking: Survival, Strategy, and the Burnout Toll

In a world built for neurotypical people, social rules often function like a second language. For autistic individuals, these rules aren't intuitive; they are learned through manual, conscious effort. This process is known as masking. It involves suppressing repetitive movements (stimming), forcing eye contact, or rehearsing social scripts to blend into the background.
