They speak of "alignment failure"—the terrifying possibility that an artificial intelligence might pursue a goal in a way that inadvertently destroys human life, much like a high-speed train failing to account for the people on the tracks.

This discourse shifts the conversation from what AI *can* do to what AI *might* do to us. It introduces a sense of cosmic urgency. When experts express fear of an existential catastrophe, they pull the collective attention toward a distant, theoretical horizon. We find ourselves looking at the stars for an incoming threat, while the ground beneath our feet is already shifting. This pivot is not merely a symptom of scientific uncertainty; it is a rhetorical movement that changes the nature of the debate entirely.

The Trap of AI Exceptionalism

At the heart of this anxiety lies a concept known as AI Exceptionalism. This is the belief that artificial intelligence is fundamentally different from every other transformative technology in history. Proponents of this view argue that while the steam engine replaced muscle and the transistor replaced manual calculation, AI might replace cognition itself, creating a self-improving cycle that humans cannot interrupt. It posits that AI is not just a new tool, but a new kind of actor—one capable of agency and unforeseen intent.

History offers a more tempered perspective. The Industrial Revolution brought about massive social upheaval, urban squalor, and environmental degradation, yet we categorize it as a shift in productive capacity rather than an existential threat to the species. Similarly, the advent of nuclear energy presented a binary choice: a world of carbon-free power or a world of nuclear winter. We managed the risk through treaties, containment, and international law. AI Exceptionalism suggests that these historical frameworks are insufficient, implying that the "singularity" is an event so unique that traditional sociological and political institutions will be rendered obsolete before they can even react.

The Distraction of the Apocalypse

There is a political economy at play when the conversation remains fixed on the "end of the world." By focusing on the theoretical risk of a rogue superintelligence, tech giants and their advocates can effectively sideline more immediate, tangible harms. These include algorithmic bias in credit scoring, the erosion of privacy through mass surveillance, and the massive carbon footprint required to train Large Language Models (LLMs).

When we debate whether an AI might decide to consume all Earth's resources, we spend less time asking how much electricity the data centers in Northern Virginia are consuming. We talk about "digital minds" while ignoring the precarious labor conditions of the thousands of low-wage workers in the Global South who spend their days labeling traumatizing images to make these models safe for Western consumption. The existential narrative acts as a fog. It obscures the direct, measurable harms that are happening right now—harms that are currently reshaping labor markets and political discourse.

The Politics of Alignment

The term "alignment problem" sounds like a technical hurdle, something a sufficiently talented engineer might solve with more compute or a better loss function. However, alignment is fundamentally a question of power. To align an AI is to program it with a set of values. This raises a difficult question: whose values are being encoded into the silicon?
