Crafting Communication Protocols Beyond Double Empathy
The Evolution of Understanding: From Deficit to Disconnection

For decades, clinical psychology viewed communication differences through the lens of individual pathology. When neurodivergent individuals, such as those on the autism spectrum, struggled to navigate social nuances, the consensus was that they lacked specific cognitive abilities. This perspective was heavily influenced by the concept of Theory of Mind (ToM), often referred to as cognitive empathy. Theory of Mind describes the cognitive capacity to attribute mental states, such as beliefs, desires, and intentions, to oneself and others. Under the traditional medical model, a failure to master these social cues was seen as a fundamental deficit in the individual's ability to understand the world. In 2012, Dr. Damian Milton introduced a transformative concept known as the Double Empathy Problem. This theory challenged the idea that communication breakdowns are one sided. Instead, it suggests that difficulties in social interaction arise from a mutual mismatch between two different neurotypes. When an autistic person and a neurotypical person interact, they are navigating different communicative frameworks. The struggle is not located solely within the autistic person but resides in the gap between these two distinct modes of being. By reframing the issue as a bidirectional misunderstanding, we move away from a model of broken individuals toward a model of mismatched systems.

The Hidden Burden of Theory of Mind and Emotional Labor

While the Double Empathy Problem offers a more accurate description of social interaction, a new problem emerges when we attempt to "fix" these gaps. Historically, the burden of adaptation has been placed almost exclusively on the neurodivergent person. The widespread reliance on Theory of Mind as a benchmark for social competence often forces neurodivergent individuals to engage in intense masking. Masking is the conscious or unconscious suppression of natural behaviors to better conform to neurotypical expectations. This process requires significant cognitive energy and results in profound emotional exhaustion. When society demands that neurodivergent individuals master neurotypical social cues to be considered "competent," it imposes an unfair amount of emotional labor. This labor is not merely about learning new skills; it is about the continuous monitoring of one's own existence to avoid social friction. If the goal of social interaction is only for the neurodivergent person to adapt, we have not solved the communication problem. We have simply trained a minority group to mimic a majority, often at the cost of their mental health and authentic selfhood.

Communication as a Matter of Epistemic Justice

To truly bridge the gap between different minds, we must look beyond psychology and toward the concept of Epistemic Justice. Epistemic justice refers to the fairness and dignity afforded to individuals as knowers and contributors to knowledge. In many social settings, certain communication styles are labeled as "rational," "clear," or "standard." These labels are rarely neutral. They are often shaped by neurotypical standards of eye contact, vocal prosody, and linear storytelling. When neurodivergent communication styles are dismissed as "awkward" or "illogical," it constitutes a form of epistemic injustice. This marginalization occurs because societal power structures dictate which ways of speaking and being are deemed valid. If a person's way of processing information or expressing emotion does not align with the dominant norm, their perspective is often undervalued or ignored. By recognizing this, we can see that the struggle for better communication is not just about social etiquette. It is about human rights and the right to be heard and understood on one's own terms. Moving toward justice means questioning why certain modes of expression are treated as the gold standard and why others are treated as deviations.

Linguistic Anthropology and the Construction of Social Reality

Linguistic anthropology teaches us that language does more than just describe the world; it actively shapes our perception of reality. The way we structure sentences, use metaphors, and interpret silence all contribute to how we understand our surroundings.
