Navigating Reality in the Age of Interest Graphs
From Social Connections to Interest-Based Discovery

The architecture of digital interaction has undergone a significant structural shift. In the first generation of social media, platforms relied heavily on social graphs. This meant your feed was primarily determined by your explicit interpersonal connections, such as friends, family, and colleagues. While this created a sense of community, it was not a perfect public square. These networks often functioned as echo chambers where existing social biases and kinship ties limited exposure to outside perspectives. Today, we have entered a new era defined by interest graphs. Platforms like TikTok represent this second generation, where content is delivered based on what you consume rather than who you know. This shift replaces the human network with a recommendation engine that prioritizes engagement. While this can fragment a shared public experience, it also offers significant benefits. Interest graphs democratize content discovery by allowing creators to reach massive audiences without needing established social capital or existing celebrity status.

The Mechanics of Recommender Systems

At a technical level, these platforms use complex recommender systems to predict user preferences. These systems often employ mathematical methods such as cosine similarities and weighted averages to determine which content is most likely to trigger a click or a reaction. By calculating the mathematical distance between different data points of user behavior, the algorithm builds a detailed profile of your interests. The primary driver for these architectures is the advertising-based business model. To maximize revenue, platforms must maximize the time spent on the app. This creates a systemic incentive to surface content that is highly stimulating. Because the goal is to capture attention, these opaque, profit-driven systems mediate the visibility, circulation, and suppression of speech. This shifts the role of the gatekeeper from human editors with established standards to mathematical code designed to optimize commercial metrics.

The Impact on Language and Expression

The focus on engagement does more than just suggest videos; it can act as an invisible editor of social expression. Because algorithms prioritize content that provokes strong emotional responses, there is evidence that this shapes how people communicate. A large scale study involving 235 million posts from Bluesky users demonstrated that algorithmic feeds can lead to higher levels of stylistic accommodation and semantic alignment. This suggests that as people attempt to engage with the system, they may subconsciously adjust their language, register, and vocabulary to match the perceived expectations of the algorithm. However, it is important to distinguish between coerced linguistic shifts and the natural evolution of digital shorthand. While algorithmic pressure is a factor, the rise of internet slang and new ways of communicating is also a byproduct of rapid digital interaction. The challenge lies in determining how much of our communication is a genuine cultural evolution and how much is a reaction to being groomed by a machine.

User Agency and the Path Forward

It is a mistake to view algorithmic influence as an inevitable, monolithic force. Users are not passive recipients of data; they exercise agency through various forms of algorithmic resistance and intentional curation. Many individuals actively fight against their feeds by searching for specific topics, following diverse accounts, or even using
