Moving away from fire-based land clearing requires replacing the immediate cash flow of oil palm or pulpwood with stable, wetter-friendly livelihoods. Instead of draining the peat, many communities are turning to paludiculture. This involves farming crops that actually thrive in high-water environments, such as sago palm, medicinal plants, or native fruit trees like salak. These species do not require the peat to dry out, which prevents the ground from shrinking and catching fire.
Sustainable aquaculture offers another path. Instead of burning forests to create ponds, farmers can manage managed peatland systems for fish or shrimp cultivation using controlled water levels. This keeps the peat saturated and stable. Additionally, carbon credit markets are beginning to provide direct payments to local communities and villages. If they can prove they have kept the peat intact and unburned, they receive financial incentives that rival the profits from clearing land.
Socially, these shifts rely on community-based forest management. When local people have legal rights to manage their surroundings, they tend to protect them. Transitioning from extractive industries to these regenerative models helps secure long-term income without turning the soil into a tinderbox.
