Neurodivergent individuals, especially those with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), face a more than threefold increased risk of suicide attempts and completed suicides in Denmark. This elevated risk is observed across all age groups and is strongly linked to the presence of psychiatric comorbidities, with over 90% of suicide attempts or deaths involving individuals with both ASD and other mental health disorders.
Key contributing factors include emotion dysregulation, co-occurring mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as social challenges like loneliness, bullying, and unmet support needs. These interacting elements can increase vulnerability to suicidal behavior.
Given these risks, tailored suicide prevention strategies focusing on psychiatric comorbidities and social support are critical. For more information, visit DRISP Research Project.
