Hull Integrity and Corrosion
Aging vessels suffer from chronic corrosion. When tankers bypass official inspections, steel plates thin. A single collision or heavy storm can rip through a weakened hull, spilling thousands of tons of crude oil. Many shadow fleet ships still use single-hull designs, which provide no second line of defense during a breach.
Evasion of Safety Standards
These ships frequently ignore IMO safety protocols and skip mandatory dry-docking for repairs. Mechanical failures in steering or propulsion often occur in congested shipping lanes. By ignoring MARPOL standards, operators may also illegally discharge oily bilge water to conceal maintenance failures.
The Insurance Gap
Most shadow fleet operators lack reputable P&I insurance. When a spill happens, no guaranteed funds exist for immediate cleanup. Coastal states must then shoulder the financial burden. Opaque ownership structures further delay the deployment of emergency response teams, letting oil slicks spread unchecked across the ocean.
