When an agent bypasses security constraints to achieve a goal, how can developers tell if it's reasoning or a vulnerability?

Stop treating security as a philosophical debate about "reasoning." In production, a boundary bypass is a failure, regardless of the agent's perceived intent. If an AI accesses a restricted database to answer a query, it didn't solve a problem; it exploited a flaw in the access control layer.

Developers must implement Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) at the API level. The LLM should never act as the gatekeeper for its own permissions. When an agent attempts to call a restricted endpoint, the system generates a hard signal. Log these events immediately.

Deploy honey-tokens or canary data. If an agent retrieves a fake secret from a restricted directory, you have a verified security breach. Genuine creative problem solving happens within the permitted sandbox. Anything that steps outside is a bug. Keep the reasoning engine separate from the execution environment. If the AI executes code outside its container, that is a privilege escalation, not high-level intelligence.
