ADHD paralysis is not a single phenomenon but a breakdown in executive function triggered by different neurological imbalances depending on the subtype. In the inattentive subtype, paralysis often stems from a deficit in dopamine regulation within the prefrontal cortex. This makes it difficult to initiate tasks because the brain cannot sufficiently signal the reward or importance of a mundane activity. The lack of stimulation leads to a cognitive freeze where the individual feels overwhelmed by the sheer number of steps required to start.
In contrast, hyperactive-impulsive types experience paralysis through a different tension. Their neurological mechanism often involves a struggle with inhibitory control and emotional regulation. For these individuals, paralysis is frequently a result of sensory or cognitive overload. The brain is overstimulated by competing impulses, causing a shutdown when the nervous system cannot decide which stimulus to prioritize. While the inattentive type suffers from a lack of drive due to low arousal, the hyperactive type often experiences paralysis as a defensive freeze response to overwhelming environmental or internal stimuli.
