To understand why the water in regions like Bentiu becomes truly toxic, one must look at the role of oil infrastructure. The Unity State is a primary hub for petroleum extraction in South Sudan. In areas where oil wells and processing facilities are situated, the landscape is crisscrossed by industrial sites.
