Power and Surveillance in Blink Twice
The Illusion of the Tech Utopia

Far from the reach of regulators or public scrutiny, a secluded island serves as a hedonistic playground for the tech-utopia dream. In Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut, *Blink Twice*, the setting acts as a physical version of the walled gardens built by Silicon Valley elites. This island is more than a vacation spot; it is a closed system. It functions as a controlled environment where social contracts and physical autonomy are traded for a manufactured euphoria.

Slater King, played by Channing Tatum, is the film's personification of the benevolent billionaire. He offers luxury and an escape, but the escape is a trap. The film uses the aesthetics of wealth—pristine water, high-end cocktails, and seamless service—to mask a predatory structure. This goes beyond one man's excess. It explores how extreme wealth creates a vacuum where people become mere data points or, worse, biological resources used to maintain a lifestyle.

Frida and the Invisible Labor Force

Naomi Ackie plays Frida, a cocktail waitress at the center of this volatility. She represents the essential service class that makes this high-life possible, yet remains frequently erased. While billionaires engage in philosophical and recreational pursuits, Frida’s existence is defined by her utility. She pours the drinks, reads the moods, and moves through the periphery of the frame like a ghost.

The horror in Blink Twice stems from the realization that Frida is tolerated only so long as she remains useful and compliant. The film captures the systemic exploitation baked into the service industry. To the island's inhabitants, the staff are mere infrastructure, no different from the plumbing or the internet. This dehumanization is a prerequisite for the psychological manipulation that follows. Once a person is stripped of their status as a peer, they become a subject for experimentation.

Does 'Blink Twice' frame the benevolent billionaire as a tool for exploitation?
How does Blink Twice show humans becoming biological resources?
