The Critical State of Zaporizhzhia

The situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Europe’s largest, represents a grave concern for global nuclear safety. Since falling under occupation in 2022, the facility has endured repeated and prolonged power outages. These incidents, coupled with active military activity near the site, have dramatically increased the risk of a serious accident.

The Challenge of Constant Cooling:

Even though all six reactors are in cold shutdown mode, they require a constant supply of electricity simply to cool their spent fuel pools and residual nuclear core activities. When the plant loses its connection to external power lines, it must switch to backup diesel generators. These generators, however, are designed only for short-term emergency use.

Reliance on Emergency Power Sources

Experts warn that running these large diesel generators continuously is highly stressful and risky. One expert noted that even reliable machinery requires intense maintenance due to wear and tear, making failure a genuine possibility after extended periods of operation.

Impacts of Disconnections

The plant has suffered numerous blackouts, including one that severed the connection on September 23rd. These repeated losses are unprecedented in modern nuclear history and raise fears among international bodies like the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Repeated power failures challenge the ability to maintain critical safety systems.

The Humanitarian Fear

Beyond technical risks, there is deep concern regarding the environment. Local leaders have expressed fear that a potential meltdown could contaminate local water sources, including the Dnipro River and even the Black Sea. This worry is compounded by concerns over the compromised main water source for the plant.

Safety experts and international officials have consistently stressed that restoring a stable, continuous power supply from both sides is paramount. The complex status of the facility means that any attempt to establish new connections must be based on improving security conditions on the ground.
