The rapid development of severe thunderstorms depends on the interaction of three primary ingredients: moisture, instability, and lift. Moisture provides the fuel for the storm. When the air near the ground is warm and holds a high amount of water vapor, it contains significant potential energy. As this moist air rises and cools, that water vapor condenses into droplets, releasing latent heat which further fuels the storm's upward movement.

Atmospheric instability is the second crucial component. This occurs when the air near the surface is much warmer than the air higher up in the atmosphere. Because warm air is less dense than cool air, it wants to rise rapidly. The greater the temperature difference between the surface and the upper atmosphere, the faster and more violent the upward movement, known as an updraft, will be.

Finally, a lifting mechanism is required to start the upward motion. This can be caused by cold fronts pushing warm air upward, convergence where winds meet, or even terrain like mountains. When high moisture, extreme instability, and a strong trigger occur simultaneously, severe thunderstorms can form very quickly.
