How will Starlink's entry affect Reliance Jio's price-driven strategy, and will it lower costs or create a luxury segment?

Starlink operates on a fundamentally different cost structure than Reliance Jio. While Jio leverages massive terrestrial infrastructure to drive down prices for millions, Starlink relies on Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations. The high cost of user terminals—the hardware needed to connect—means Starlink cannot compete on a budget level.

It won't force Jio to lower its already aggressive pricing. Instead, Starlink will likely carve out a luxury tier. This service targets remote regions where laying fiber optic cable is geographically impossible or too expensive. It also appeals to high-net-worth individuals and enterprises requiring redundant, high-speed connectivity.

We are looking at market segmentation rather than a price war. Jio will keep the mass market with 5G and FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home), while Starlink serves the fringes. The competition shifts from price to reach. This creates a bifurcated market: affordable access for the city and premium access for the periphery.
