True moral judgment typically requires certain cognitive abilities that go beyond basic cooperation. These include empathy, the ability to understand intent, and the capacity to follow social rules even when they are inconvenient. While many animals show signs of fairness or reciprocity, moral judgment often implies a sense of duty or a concept of right and wrong.
