Neptune's extreme weather patterns and incredibly fast winds are primarily driven by a significant internal heat source. Despite being the farthest planet from the Sun, Neptune radiates much more energy than it receives from solar radiation. Scientists believe this internal heat is generated by gravitational contraction or residual heat from the planet's formation. This excess energy provides the necessary thermal energy to power the planet's powerful atmospheric circulation.
This internal heat creates strong convection currents within the atmosphere. As warm gases rise and cool gases sink, they drive massive, high-velocity jet streams. These winds are among the fastest in the solar system, with speeds reaching over 2,000 kilometers per hour. The combination of this internal heat and the planet's relatively small distance from the Sun's gravitational influence allows for the maintenance of highly dynamic and turbulent storm systems, such as the Great Dark Spot.
Because the solar energy received is so low, the internal heat becomes the dominant driver of atmospheric motion. This makes Neptune's weather much more active than would be expected for an ice giant located so far from the Sun.
