High cortisol levels trigger a process called dendritic atrophy. Essentially, the neurons in your hippocampus begin to shrink. They pull back their branches, known as dendrites, making it much harder for different cells to signal one another. Imagine a city's power grid losing its connections; the light might still flicker, but the flow of information becomes unreliable. This physical shrinking makes retrieving stored information a struggle, leading to those frustrating lapses in memory.
Furthermore, cortisol can actively kill existing neurons and block the birth of new ones, a process called neurogenesis. This prevents the brain from repairing itself or expanding its capacity to store new data. As the density of these neurons drops, the structural integrity of the hippocampus weakens.
