Blue straggler stars are fascinating because they appear much younger and bluer than the other stars in a cluster like Messier 13. Scientists believe these stars are created through two primary mechanisms that allow them to gain extra mass.
The first mechanism is a stellar merger. In the crowded environment of a globular cluster, two stars can collide and merge into a single, larger, and more massive star. This collision provides a fresh supply of hydrogen to the core, making the new star burn brighter and appear younger than its neighbors.
The second mechanism is mass transfer within a binary star system. If two stars are orbiting very closely, one star can pull material away from its companion through its outer layers. This process adds fresh fuel to the receiving star, increasing its mass and shifting its color toward the blue end of the spectrum.
In a dense cluster like Messier 13, these interactions are much more common due to the high concentration of stars. Both collisions and steady mass transfer serve to rejuvenate these stars, making them stand out as luminous anomalies within the aging population of the cluster.
