How can urban planners actually use starlight to light up crowded cities that have many tall buildings and shadows?

Using starlight as a primary light source in dense urban environments is currently not a practical or scientifically viable solution for city lighting. While the idea of natural light is appealing, there are several physical reasons why starlight cannot replace street lamps or building lights.

First, stars are extremely far away. The light they emit is incredibly faint by the time it reaches Earth. Even a full moon provides much more light than the entire night sky combined. Even in the darkest locations on Earth, starlight is not bright enough to allow people to see walkways, roads, or buildings clearly.

Second, the presence of high-rise buildings creates permanent shadows. These structures block the direct line of sight to most stars in the sky. In a dense city, the view of the sky is limited to small strips between buildings, making it impossible to get consistent light from above.

Instead of relying on starlight, urban planners focus on reducing light pollution. By using shielded LED lamps that point downward, cities can reduce glare and make the actual stars more visible to residents without sacrificing safety.
