Can planting trees and restoring wet peatlands truly protect ecosystems against the rising fire threats from intensifying super El Niño events?

Nature-based solutions act as a buffer, but they cannot completely negate the volatility brought by super El Niño cycles. When these climate events strike, they drive extreme droughts that turn many ecosystems into tinderboxes. Reforestation helps by restoring shade and moisture cycles, cooling the ground beneath the canopy. Healthy forests manage water better, which can delay the onset of dry spells.

Peatland rewetting is perhaps more vital for fire prevention. Peat stores immense amounts of carbon, but when it dries out, it becomes highly flammable fuel. Re-wetting these areas keeps the ground sodden, making it nearly impossible for ground fires to take hold or smolder underground for years. A wet peatland is a natural firebreak.

However, we must be realistic. If El Niño cycles become too frequent or intense, even restored lands may hit a breaking point. Extreme heat can desiccate even the wettest soils and kill young saplings. These projects buy us time and build resilience, but they work best when paired with rapid carbon reduction. Planting trees alone won't stop a furnace if the underlying climate continues to shift toward extreme dryness.
